Brainspotting
Brainspotting is a powerful neurophysiological therapy that uses the visual field to connect to traumatic information stored in the subcortical brain. The practitioner, a supportive and focused presence, guides the client in finding a ‘brainspot’, a location in the client’s visual field that contains thoughts, feelings, memories and sensations that are related to their traumatic experiences. Using focused mindfulness, the client’s brain is able to process memories that have been inaccessible to their conscious awareness. The therapist is attuned to the reflexive, somatic and subtle cues of the client to guide and support the processing of physical and emotional dysregulation. This supports the client’s nervous system in returning to a healthy state of regulation, and allows for a deeper, more embodied healing.

What you can expect
Brainspotting uses fixed eye positions, focused mindfulness and awareness of the body to access, process and integrate stored traumatic memories which underlie a wide range of emotional and physical problems. In a brainspotting session, your practitioner will guide you to notice locations in your visual field that contain a greater felt sense of an emotion or body sensation. Your focused awareness will allow deep processing to unfold. The therapist will remain carefully attuned to your experience, paying attention to the subtle body, reflexes and other sensory cues in order to help you safely navigate the process. Brainspotting does not rely on talking to process trauma. Often, bilateral sound - calming music or nature sounds which move back and forth between right and left ears - is used to help balance the activation of the right and left brain hemispheres and activate a calming effect through the parasympathetic nervous system.
